رمضان كريم! شهر مبارك عليك (Ramadan kareem! Shahar mubarak 'aleik) — 'Ramadan Kareem! Blessed month to you' — is answered with الله اكرم، رمضان مبارك عليك انت وياك (Allah akram, Ramadan mubarak 'aleik inta wiyyaak) — 'God is more generous, blessed Ramadan to you too.'

Checking in on the fast
A common way to check on a friend during Ramadan is انت صايم اليوم؟ (inta saayim il-yoom?) — 'are you fasting today?' — answered with اي والله صايم (ay wallah saayim) — 'yes, I'm fasting.' If you want to invite them over, you might say تعال عدنا الفطور الساعة سبعة (ta'aal 'idna il-futoor is-saa'a sab'a) — 'come over for iftar at seven.'

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha greetings
At the end of Ramadan, Iraqis say عيد فطر مبارك! كل عام وانت بخير (Eid fitr mubarak! Kull 'aam w-inta b-kheir) — 'blessed Eid al-Fitr, may you be well every year.' For Eid al-Adha, the greeting is عيد الأضحى المبارك! تقبل الله منا ومنكم (Eid il-adha il-mubarak! Taqabbal Allah minna w-minkum) — 'blessed Eid al-Adha, may God accept it from us and from you.'

No Iraqi Eid is complete without كليجة (kleicha), a date or nut-filled pastry that families bake together in the days before Eid. And children look forward to العيدية (al-'eediyya) — the cash gifts handed out by parents, uncles, and grandparents on Eid morning.
